Axis DeerCervus Axix Axis deer are native to India and Sri Lanka, and were eventually bred in the United States in the 1930's. Unlike other deer, Axis are more prized for their pelt than their antlers, as they retain the spots throughout their life. They have a distinctive dark coat with light spots and white undersides and neck patch. The young have a dark stripe running along the spine. Axis deer have been known to gather in large herds of up to 120 deer. Axis deer can be good swimmers and do not fear water. Since Axis deer are primarily grazers, their meat is very lean and highly prized by some individuals. |
